Park Tool Freewheel Removers

Park Tool Freewheel Removers are professional-grade, heat-treated alloy steel tools designed for installing and removing threaded multi-gear cogs (freewheels) from bicycle wheel hubs. Unlike cassette lockring tools, which feature shallower splines, these dedicated freewheel removers utilize a deep-well, thin-walled construction that allows the tool to glide deeply over high-profile axle cones and locknuts—eliminating the need for a full axle teardown.

Pro-Tips for Safe Removal

Freewheels tighten automatically with every pedal stroke, requiring immense torque to break free. Follow these tips to prevent injury or tool damage:

  1. Secure Notch Tools:
When using notch-style removers (e.g., FR-2, FR-3, or FR-6), the tool can tilt and slip, shearing off the soft metal notches. Thread your wheel’s axle nut or quick-release skewer back on loosely to trap the tool flat against the freewheel face before applying force. Back the nut off slightly as the freewheel unthreads.
  2. The Vise Trick:
Instead of struggling with a hand wrench, lock the 1" hexagonal base of the remover firmly upright into a bench vise. Drop the bicycle wheel face-down onto the tool splines, grab the outer perimeter of the tire like a giant steering wheel, and rotate the entire wheel counter-clockwise. The leverage of the wheel makes removal effortless.
  3. Anti-Seize Prep:
When installing your replacement freewheel, thoroughly grease or apply anti-seize compound to the hub threads. Hand-thread it clockwise carefully to avoid cross-threading; you do not need to wrench it tight, as pedaling the bike will naturally torque it to its final spec.
